Backyard builds: ideas and inspiration

For some homeowners, a big backyard is a great feature of a property. For others, it becomes a chore to care for.

Making the most of your backyard space can take your property to the next level. Whether it be installing a pool, adding on a deck, or building a structure on the lot, your backyard can often have a lot of potential to capitalize on.

Inspiration for backyard spaces

Whether you have a big or small backyard, there’s always something you can do to make your space suit your wants and needs.

Here are some ideas for both big and small backyards to help you make the most of your outdoor areas.

For small backyards

If you’re in the city or a subdivision, you likely have a smaller backyard space to work with, meaning you can’t always fit a huge inground pool or entertainment area. Even though you may not have endless opportunities, there are still several things you can do with a smaller backyard space.

Use vertical spaces

If you don’t have a lot of square footage on the ground, it’s best to make the most of your vertical space. This could mean building garden tresses upwards and focusing on creating unique designs vertically rather than horizontally.

You can also build a shed that has more height than it has width. This can help with storage without taking up a ton of space.

Take advantage of natural elements

Having a small backyard doesn’t mean you can’t make your space the perfect entertainment or lounging area. Making the most of the natural elements in your yard can help achieve a great design.

For example, you can take advantage of the shade that trees provide and put a lounging arrangement or hammock in that space. You can use the small hills or dips in your yard and make a natural bench. There are so many creative ways to use the aspects that are already present in your backyard.

Focus on one feature

Because you don’t have a lot of space or area to work with, it’s recommended that you focus on one main feature for your backyard makeover instead of cluttering the space with several small additions.

This could mean putting in a small inground pool, building a quaint shed, making over your garden, or focusing on putting together an area for hosting friends. Put time and money into making the one feature the best it can be and you’ll be surprised at how it can make the entire backyard space look better.

For big backyards

While a backyard’s potential is not determined by its size, often, the more space you have, the more you can do. These DIY projects can range from simple and straightforward to extravagant and luxurious.

Create a perfect hosting setup

A big backyard can mean that you have the space to host your friends for a barbecue or party during the summer months. A backyard build for this type of space could mean adding a deck with plenty of outdoor furniture to go around. You may also consider adding in a fireplace, lights, or outdoor cooking appliances to take your entertainment area to the next level.

Build affordable housing as an investment

In Toronto, homeowners are helping create more affordable housing options by building a completely separate unit on their property and renting it to individuals looking for a place to live.

These laneway suites are the perfect backyard build if you don’t know what to do with the space and you want to make a little extra side money. It also contributes to affordable housing options in big cities like Toronto.

While you will need a building permit for this backyard build, it’s still something to consider when thinking about revamping your property.
